Bread is, possibly, the most universal food in existence. It is counted among the few foods called supracultural. Within the framework of the collective project “banquet, metabolism and communication” the “PANlingua” project proposed a double invitation: on the one hand, to think of bread as the carrier of thoughts; and on the other to reflect on the role of language as organ of taste and, at the same time, as system of intracultural communication.
To this end two wood-burning ovens have been installed in the Conde Duque de Madrid Cultural centre, in which a large number of homemade bread rolls were baked daily. Messages written by all the visitors to the exhibition and the website were printed on paper and introduced into the dough.
These rolls were distributed to bars and restaurants close to the exhibition space. In this way a new means of communication emerged from a piece of bread – and what’s more, it was edible.
